Today, the whole nation mourns for our founding father, the visionary who gave his whole life to bring us to where we are today. Today, I'm filled with emotions and gratitude. Grateful of who I've become, grateful for the clean and safe country, grateful for meritocracy and racial harmony, grateful for the opportunities I have in life. I know I owe it all to him. Singaporeans all owe it to him.
I thank God for this remarkable man, for his charisma, sacrificial love and dedication to this wonderful place we proudly call home.
Borned in the 80s, I may not fully understand the tumultuous years my grandparents and parents went through, but the outpour of emotions, tears and heartaches is a testimony of the impact he has made in his lifetime.
First encounter with Mr Lee up close was as an NEA rep for Tanjong Pagar Constituency during 2013's National Day Dinner. His health has already taken a toll on him, but his commitment for the country never fails. It wasn't an easy feat then, but he braced through his annual speech for the residents and received an astounding applause of respect and admiration. Today, I went back to the same place, to pay my respect with a pure white rose to this great man.
There will never be another Lee Kuan Yew, but we can learn to be like him. Work with all your heart, serve with all your heart, love with all your heart.
During this 7 days of national mourning, I hope not for all to weep, but to celebrate the 50 years of contributions from Mr Lee and the legacy he left behind.
"50 years ago, you wept for the nation. Today, the nation weeps for you."
RIP, Mr Lee. You will always be remembered.
